FSU OB/GYN Residency Program at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL
Sacred Heart Hospital FSU College of Medicine

Message from the Director

Hello! Welcome to the Web Page of the Florida State University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program, Pensacola, Florida at Sacred Heart Hospital. The information contained in these pages has been designed to provide you an overview of our program and hopefully a sense of the flavor of it as well. Your interest in our program is sincerely appreciated.

Our program has been in existence since 1964, originating as a community-based program and evolving into the University-affiliated program it is today.

The program is a four-year, fully accredited program with three residents at each level. Our twelve residents come from all over the United States representing numerous medical schools. They are a strong group who strive to provide excellence in patient care and academic performance.

One of the advantages of a program the size of ours is that it affords close interaction between all the residents and faculty and provides more opportunity for individual instruction. We feel this allows us to have just the right balance between freedom of action by the residents and supervision by the faculty, while maintaining an emphasis on quality patient care. It also fosters a supportive educational environment.

Our program emphasizes a broad education in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology with rotations through all the subspecialties and primary care. Outpatient clinics are very busy and provide a wide range of experience and pathology. The Obstetrical Service is quite active and includes a very busy Antepartum service, which is supported by the Regional Perinatal Center, staffed by our Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty. It is also supported by a Level III NICU staffed by Board-Certified Neonatologists and the Pediatric Residency Program.

The Gynecology Service likewise is also very busy and experience in gynecologic surgery is particularly strong. Residents receive education in all areas of gynecologic surgery, including pelvic reconstruction surgery, gyn-urology, operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and laser.

The Gynecology-Oncology service is always busy and, as there are no fellows on the service, residents gain valuable first-hand surgical experience. Patients on all services are managed in both outpatient and inpatient settings and management encompasses all the current modalities and treatments available today.

Our goal is, while providing excellent patient care, to provide the quality of resident education that will allow our graduates to be able to practice the highest standards of Obstetrics and Gynecology and to be competitive for a fellowship position should they wish to obtain one. Sacred Heart Hospital strongly supports our residency and is populated by well-trained, supportive people at all levels.

Pensacola is likewise populated by friendly people and the quality of life here is excellent. All in all, it is a very pleasant place to spend your four years of residency training.

The selection of your residency is a very important decision and, in the end, can only be made by you, after appropriate research and much consideration. Obviously, you want to find the one that not only provides excellent education, but one that “fits” you as well. I encourage you to look over our program, and if it seems like it might be the type you are looking for, we welcome your further interest.

A resident must expect to work hard in our program. We strive to always do what is right for the patient, while holding to the highest standards of education and professionalism; and these are demanded of a resident. However, we feel our goals can be accomplished in a supportive environment where all can have a bit of fun as well. Whatever your final decision, we here in Pensacola wish you well in all your endeavors.

Sincerely,

Clyde H. Dorr II, M.D., FACOG
